Frequently Asked Questions
Last updated: May 2026
Quick answers to questions we hear most often. If something isn't covered here, the contact section at the bottom has direct ways to reach us.
Where does the spot data come from?
From a mix of the official Anime Tourism 88 list, municipal tourism sites, anime production committee announcements, and Wikipedia / Wikidata. See the About page for a fuller breakdown.
Is Otaku Japan free to use?
Browsing spots, planning routes (3 plans per month), and reading sample plans is free. Premium ($4.99 / month) lifts the monthly cap and adds detailed multi-day timelines and a PDF export.
Can I add my own pilgrimage spot?
User submissions are not open yet — we are working on a moderation pipeline so submitted spots get the same source verification as the rest of the database. We will announce the launch on the Roadmap page.
What if my favorite anime isn't listed?
We index 1,000+ titles from AniList plus manually-curated ones, but coverage is not exhaustive. If a series is missing, please email us — we add new works regularly and prioritize requests.
How does hotel booking work?
We do not handle bookings ourselves. Hotel cards link out to third-party affiliates (Hotellook, Klook, Booking.com etc.) where you complete the reservation. Otaku Japan earns a commission only when you complete a booking through these links.
How do I request a spot or photo be removed?
Email content disputes to ko12ma12@icloud.com with the spot URL, your relationship to the content (rights holder / depicted person / other), and the reason. We respond within 7 days.
What languages does the site support?
English, 日本語, 한국어, 中文, and Français. UI labels are fully translated; spot descriptions are translated progressively and may fall back to English while we backfill the long tail.
Is the site accessible?
We aim for WCAG 2.1 AA: keyboard navigation, sufficient color contrast, alt text on photos, and screen-reader-friendly markup. Accessibility issues are treated as bugs — please report them.
How accurate is the data?
Verified spots have been cross-checked against at least two independent sources. Other entries ("published" status) come from a single authoritative source. We display the source on every spot page so you can judge for yourself.
Still have a question?
Email ko12ma12@icloud.com. The author is a one-person operation, so replies usually come within a few days.
