Tohru Honda est une jeune fille orpheline de 16 ans qui est invitée à vivre dans la maison de son camarade de classe, le beau Sohma Yuki, et de ses cousins, Kyo, 16 ans, et Shigure, 27 ans. Cependant, ces jeunes hommes et une partie de leur famille (proche et éloignée) sont frappés d'une malédiction : s'ils sont enlacés par une personne du sexe opposé, ils se transforment en animaux du zodiaque chinois. Chaque jour est une aventure pour la douce Tohru, qui apprend à mieux connaître chaque membre de cette grande famille (en particulier Yuki et Kyo).
