Alors que le monde traverse une révolution industrielle, un monstre apparaît qu'on ne peut vaincre qu'en perçant son cœur, protégé par une couche de fer. En mordant les humains, le monstre peut créer des créatures agressives et mortes-vivantes connues sous le nom de Kabane. Sur l'île de Hinomoto, située à l'extrême orient, les gens ont construit des stations pour se protéger de ces créatures. Les gens accèdent à la station et transportent des marchandises entre elles grâce à une locomotive qui fonctionne

Located on the mountainous Hisatsu Line, this station's elevated position and surrounding forest landscape inspired several scenic railway sequences in the anime. The dramatic mountain railway setting provided reference for the treacherous journey scenes between fortress stations.
