Le début de l'été 1966. En raison de la situation professionnelle de son père, Kaoru Nishimi, élève de première année au lycée, quitte Yokosuka pour s'installer seul à Kyushu chez ses proches. Jusqu'alors, Kaoru était un élève modèle et plutôt solitaire, mais sa rencontre avec Sentaro Kawabuchi, un mauvais garçon notoire, commence à le transformer. À travers ce camarade de classe insouciant, Kaoru découvre les charmes du jazz et trouve la première personne qu'il peut vraiment appeler un « ami ». Il réalise aussi combien c'est amusant de jouer de la musique.
