En l'an 198 de l'ère solaire à Tokyo, des brigades de pompiers spécialisées combattent un phénomène appelé combustion humaine spontanée, transformant les êtres humains en créatures de feu vivantes appelées « Infernaux ». Alors que les premiers Infernaux résultent de cas de combustion spontanée, les générations suivantes possèdent la capacité de manipuler les flammes tout en conservant une forme humaine. Shinra Kusakabe, un jeune homme surnommé l'Empreinte du Diable pour sa capacité à enflammer ses pieds à volonté, intègre la Brigade spécialisée des pompiers.
