Il revient pour la première fois en deux ans dans son île natale, à l'occasion des funérailles. Sou Hishigata, son meilleur ami, sent que quelque chose cloche dans cette mort et craint qu'une nouvelle victime ne tombe. Comme pour confirmer ce mauvais pressentiment, dès le lendemain, toute la famille voisine disparaît sans laisser de trace. De plus, Mio évoque la présence d'une « ombre » trois jours avant la mort d'Ushio.
