Souffrant de crises d'asthme fréquentes, la jeune Anna Sasaki est silencieuse, peu sociable et tenue à l'écart par ses camarades, ce qui inquiète sans cesse sa mère adoptive. Sur recommandation du médecin, elle est envoyée à la campagne dans l'espoir qu'un air plus pur et un mode de vie plus paisible améliorent sa santé.
