Makoto Tsukimoto, surnommé Smile, est un lycéen taciturne, ami de longue date du bruyant et énergique Yutaka Hoshino, alias Peko. L'entraîneur du club, lui, repère le talent de Smile et essaie de lui insuffler une véritable rage de vaincre.
