Makoto Tsukimoto, surnommé Smile, est un lycéen taciturne, ami de longue date du bruyant et énergique Yutaka Hoshino, alias Peko. Tous deux jouent au club de tennis de table et y excellent, mais le caractère de Smile l'empêche de battre Peko. L'entraîneur du club, lui, repère le talent de Smile et essaie de lui insuffler une véritable rage de vaincre.
